Spa treatments are very popular these days. They are a form of relaxation and a way to spend time. Many women use spas before they become pregnant and wonder if it is safe to do so during the nine months they are expecting a baby. Find out which spa treatments are safe during pregnancy.

Spa during pregnancy – is it safe?

Wellness during pregnancy is a very controversial topic. The question of whether a spa is safe during pregnancy cannot be answered unequivocally due to the variety of treatments and their effects on the body. Experts agree that the use of saunas or whirlpools is not allowed during pregnancy. This is because of the high temperatures involved in these treatments. Likewise, the expectant mother should refrain from treatments in which high temperatures are used. In extreme cases, this can lead to a loss of pregnancy. A large group of wellness treatments that are safe during pregnancy are various types of massages. However, you should always tell the person treating you that you are pregnant. There are also special treatments for expectant mothers that target the lumbar region, which most often affects pregnant women. Most spas have a range of treatments for pregnant women. Among other things, they recommend treatments that reduce the risk of stretch marks on the skin or make them less visible. The therapists usually know exactly which procedures are not allowed during pregnancy. These include, above all, treatments with retinol, which must be avoided during the entire pregnancy.

Spa during pregnancy – in which trimester?

If a pregnant woman wants to use wellness treatments during pregnancy, she should consult her doctor. In most cases, the best time is the 2nd and 3rd trimester, when the risk of pregnancy loss is lower than in the 1st trimester. This is also the time when expectant mothers feel the effects of pregnancy the most, i.e. back pain, swollen ankles or stretch marks.

Spa during pregnancy – what is not allowed?

During pregnancy, unnecessary injections, i.e. various punctures in the skin, should be avoided. The reason for this is the risk of possible infection with diseases such as HIV. For the same reason, tattoos should not be applied during pregnancy. The use of various vitamin A derivatives, including retinol, is not allowed. As already mentioned, pregnant women should avoid saunas and whirlpools with very hot water. Laser hair removal should also be avoided during pregnancy, as there are no conclusive studies on its safety during this time.

If an expectant mother wants a spa treatment, she should consult her family doctor to rule out any contraindications and choose a place that offers treatments for pregnant women. It is also a good idea to choose a professional place that has experience with this type of clientele and that is recommended by other expectant mothers.
