Women often ask their doctors which hair care and cosmetic procedures are safe during pregnancy. One of the recurring questions is about hair colouring. Is it safe during pregnancy?

Hair during pregnancy – does it fall out?

Most expectant mothers want a clear answer to the question of how their hair is during pregnancy. However, this is not possible. Every case is different, and just like pregnancy symptoms, the condition of hair also depends on the individual woman. However, it is known that in most pregnant women, the hair gains shine and becomes stronger, while after delivery, it falls out in rows. However, this is not the rule. The reason for this is the hormonal storm that takes place in the mother-to-be’s body. In some women, the hair curls and becomes frizzy during pregnancy, while in others it is thin, smooth and flat.

Hair during pregnancy – colouring

The myth of dyeing hair during pregnancy is repeated by our grandmothers and mothers. Nowadays, however, hair dyes very rarely contain harmful ammonia. Therefore, it is best to choose a salon that uses this type of dye. The myth about the prohibition of hair dyeing or bleaching during pregnancy was based on the fact that inhaling ammonia in excess was harmful. Nowadays, there are more and more colours that are anti-allergenic and suitable for women who are sensitive to pungent smells, for example. If the smell of hair dye still bothers you, it is advisable to postpone a visit to the hairdresser until the second trimester, when the sensitivity to taste or smell is probably no longer so bothersome.

Hair during pregnancy – can it be straightened?

Most hair care products are safe during pregnancy. However, you should choose products suitable for pregnant women with neutral fragrances and as few chemical ingredients as possible. The same applies to curling or straightening your hair. Curling or straightening hair is also safe during pregnancy, but you should consider the negative effects of heat on the hair. Straightening with keratin, on the other hand, should be avoided because the expectant mother can inhale ammonia in the process. In addition to keratin, these products also contain formaldehyde.
