Lifting during pregnancy - is it safe?

During pregnancy, much depends on the course of the pregnancy. If everything is fine and the course of the pregnancy is healthy, there is no contraindication for the expectant mother to carry groceries or lift her older child. It is best to ask your gynaecologist if lifting is safe for the individual pregnant woman. In pregnancies with complications, e.g. threatened miscarriage or premature birth, lifting is contraindicated and the woman should lead a frugal lifestyle.

Certain standards have been set for the number of kilos a pregnant woman can lift. Lifting objects weighing up to 20 kg is the most common activity. The more advanced the pregnancy, the less they should weigh. In the 3rd trimester, it is considered that the weight lifted should be less than 11 kilograms. 

Why should you not lift during pregnancy?

In a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy, lifting is not contraindicated in most cases. Of course, this is a matter of common sense. If the expectant mother works in a job that requires her to carry heavy objects, she should be able to change jobs or take sick leave. Experts also advise against lifting weights in your free time or working out in the gym. The abdominal muscles should also not be strained during pregnancy to avoid possible complications.

Conditions that preclude lifting during pregnancy are:

  • bleeding from the genital tract
  • short cervix and threatened premature birth
  • placenta previa
  • leakage of amniotic fluid

Women with multiple pregnancies and polydactyly should also refrain from lifting.

Heavy lifting during pregnancy - what are the risks?

Lifting loads during pregnancy carries all kinds of dangers. It can cause or aggravate back or abdominal pain. It can also lead to dangerous back injuries. If a woman lifts an object that is too heavy during genital bleeding, she may miscarry. The same is true if the cervix is short and there is a risk of premature birth. In most cases, carrying shopping will not cause such complications, but it is a good idea to involve relatives or your partner in carrying heavy shopping nets and other items.

If the expectant mother has doubts about whether lifting in her case will definitely not jeopardise the correct course and development of the pregnancy, she should ask her gynaecologist. A physiotherapist can also help you and show you how to lift heavier objects safely.
