Cosmetic treatments during pregnancy - are they safe?

Cosmetic procedures have become part of everyday life for many women. Regular visits to the hairdresser or beautician are no surprise. However, it is important to remember that during pregnancy, not everything that was previously routine is safe. Until some time ago, the rule was "the less the better", and expectant mothers were advised against dyeing their hair, for example. Nowadays, we know that modern styling products contain much less ammonia. As a result, their smell is also less pronounced. The same applies to artificial nails, which have become very popular in recent years. It has not been proven that artificial fingernails are harmful during pregnancy. Another point is, of course, the hygiene and safety conditions in the salons you visit. During pregnancy, very close attention should be paid to the proper sterilisation and disinfection of the equipment. For this reason, treatments that disrupt the continuity of the tissue, such as tattoos, needle mesotherapy or Botox, must not be performed during pregnancy. As for hair removal, it is better to avoid laser hair removal during pregnancy and use other methods. The negative effects of lasers on pregnancy have not been clearly proven and research is still ongoing.

Cosmetic treatments during pregnancy - which are prohibited?

There is a group of cosmetic treatments that are prohibited during pregnancy. These include all treatments with vitamin A derivatives, mainly retinol and tretinoin. Retinoids are considered teratogenic substances. Expectant mothers are also advised against cosmetic treatments that use high temperatures. Cosmetic treatments that trigger allergies in pregnant women should also be avoided. Cosmetics that do not contain strong fragrances are also recommended. Before a cosmetic treatment, the expectant mother should always inform the practitioner that she is expecting a child.

What cosmetic treatments are recommended during pregnancy?

Many cosmetic treatments today are aimed directly at the group of expectant mothers. Most commonly mentioned are treatments to tighten the skin, reduce stretch marks and relaxing treatments such as special massages. These treatments are carried out by experienced professionals who deal with pregnant women on a daily basis and can advise which treatment is safe. Ideally, before using any treatments, always ask the treating doctor for his or her opinion and for the presence of contraindications.
