Symptoms of iron deficiency during pregnancy

Iron deficiency leading to microcytic anaemia is a common complication of pregnancy. Symptoms of iron deficiency during pregnancy include weakness, pallor, rapid fatigue, lethargy, headaches or concentration problems. Palpitations and shortness of breath can also occur. However, many expectant mothers are unaware of iron deficiency or do not associate it with pregnancy symptoms, and anaemia is detected during routine blood work. This is why it is so important that the tests ordered by the gynaecologist are carried out regularly.

Treatment of iron deficiency during pregnancy

The treatment of iron deficiency begins with the oral intake of iron supplements. Depending on the manufacturer, the iron supplements must be taken on an empty stomach or in combination with a meal. The consumption of orange juices and pickles is recommended. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron.

It is advisable to eat iron-rich foods such as parsley and meat every day.

If the expectant mother does not tolerate oral iron supplements well, an intravenous iron transfusion is necessary. If the haemoglobin level is very low, a blood transfusion in hospital may be necessary.

Iron deficiency during pregnancy - complications

Iron deficiency during pregnancy can have a negative impact on the course of the pregnancy. It increases the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and foetal growth retardation. Newborns of women who are anaemic are more likely to have lower Apgar scores and there is a higher risk of premature birth and anaemia in the baby.

Iron supplements during pregnancy

There are various iron supplements on the market that expectant mothers can take. Medications that have a proven composition, unlike dietary supplements, are considered to be the most effective. For this reason, pregnant women should take medication prescribed by a doctor. Sometimes it takes a while to find the right preparation. This is because iron can cause gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea and constipation.
