Pregnancy is a time of many changes in the expectant mother's body. In addition to creating the best possible conditions for the child's development, the body is also preparing for the birth. One of the symptoms of this is the stretching of the pubic symphysis, which usually occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. Find out more about the symptoms and treatment of diastasis of the symphysis pubis.

What is a diastasis of the symphysis pubis?

Diastasis of the symphysis pubis occurs quite frequently during pregnancy. It is usually the result of hormones such as relaxin, which is responsible for relaxing the joints and ligaments during pregnancy to make it easier for the baby to pass through the birth canal during labour. A “side effect” of this hormone is its effect on the pubic symphysis and surrounding ligaments. The symptoms can be exacerbated by a growing belly and a change in the mother-to-be’s centre of gravity.

Diastasis of the symphysis pubis – symptoms

A typical symptom of diastasis of the symphysis pubis is pain in the entire pelvic girdle and in the area of the conjunctiva. The pain can radiate to the buttocks and lower limbs. The pain is usually worse after prolonged standing. The pain also occurs when climbing stairs or walking fast. Women who were less active before pregnancy tend to suffer more.

Diastasis of the symphysis pubis – treatment

The first step in the event of pain is a correct diagnosis. This is usually done by a doctor or physiotherapist who is experienced in working with pregnant women. It is not necessary to carry out imaging examinations. Targeted exercises and rehabilitation with a physiotherapist are advisable to alleviate the discomfort. In addition, painkillers (especially paracetamol during pregnancy) can be used if the pain is severe. In some situations, a special belt can be used, but this should not be the treatment of first choice.

Diastasis of the symphysis pubis and delivery

A diastasis of the symphysis pubis during pregnancy is not an indication for a caesarean section. Most women give birth naturally and the symptoms disappear a few days after delivery. If the displacement is large, the opinion of an orthopaedic surgeon may be required.

If you have been diagnosed with a diastasis of the symphysis pubis and are experiencing pain, it makes sense to see a physiotherapist. With the right exercises, you can alleviate the symptoms and prepare yourself better for the birth.
