Is an MRI safe during pregnancy?

MRI is considered a safe screening procedure during pregnancy. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, electromagnetic radiation is used instead of X-rays. It is harmless for both the developing foetus and the pregnant woman. Experts recommend waiting until the 2nd trimester for elective examinations, as it is better to minimise all interventions at the beginning of pregnancy, during organ development. If urgently required, an MRI can of course be carried out in all trimesters of pregnancy.

When should an MRI be performed during pregnancy?

MRI during pregnancy is performed in various cases. The MRI is ordered for patients with severe headaches, dizziness, vomiting or visual disturbances. Its main purpose is to rule out an ischaemic stroke, which can be a complication of pregnancy. An MRI is also performed if the ultrasound examination of the abdomen is not conclusive. If the expectant mother has symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting or peritoneal discomfort and the ultrasound result does not provide a clear answer to the diagnosis, an MRI of the abdomen can be performed. However, it should be borne in mind that the ultrasound examination remains primarily the examination of choice.

MRI scan of the baby - what is it?

Not everyone knows that it is now possible to have an MRI scan of the baby during pregnancy. It is ordered in special cases when the doctor suspects anatomical defects in the foetus. It is more accurate than an ultrasound scan and can help in planning further treatment, e.g. for possible intrauterine interventions, the type of delivery or postnatal treatment. However, it is an extremely difficult examination to interpret and should therefore only be carried out in special cases and by experienced radiologists specialising in foetal MRI.
